about

i was about 6 when i came to my parents to ask if the easter bunny was real, they asked me, as they always did with such things, "what do you think?"

when i asked my parents about religion years later, they told me a story about going to a church with my dad's mom. the minister there went on to explain how in heaven, everyone gets a cube. and on every side of your cube is your loved ones and everyone you cared about. my parents thought that was about the stupidest thing they'd ever heard.

I went through some major heartbreaks in University. There was a monument in the middle of campus that read Mo Shùile Togam Suas (Gaelic) for Lift Up My Eyes. When I was feeling especially down one day, I read that, and i did, i lifted my head and lifted my eyes, and suddenly i saw things for what they were.

lyrics

lift up your eyes
lift up your eyes
quit staring at the ground
take a look around

i haven t written a song this optimistic
since i was nere a man
lost somewhere in israel
or somewhere deep in hell

so lift up your eyes
lift up your eyes

one day my mama said to me
while we were driving in her car
have you ever thought
how everyone is going to someone else s hell?
like the jews to the muslim s hell
or a buddhist to a mormon hell and so on?

i said yes ma
but we are goin to all of them
we are goin to all of them
we are goin to all those hells

lift up your eyes
